Houses With Two Systems

Larger houses often run two systems: a furnace or boiler for the lower floors and an attic air handler, a second furnace or a heat pump for the bedrooms. When one floor is fine and the other is not, the fault is in that system alone: a failed blower motor or board in one unit, a frozen coil in the attic air handler, a zone damper stuck shut, or a thermostat that has lost its call for heat or cooling. An attic air handler with a plugged condensate line fills its pan, trips the float switch and shuts the cooling off, or leaks through the ceiling if the switch is missing.

Zone Controls and Thermostats

Zoned boilers and zoned duct systems add controls that fail on their own: zone valves and their end switches, damper motors, zone panels and the transformers that power them. A zone that heats all the time often has a zone valve stuck open or a shorted thermostat wire, and a zone that never heats has a valve or damper that will not open. Smart thermostats added to older systems often lack a common wire, so they drain their batteries or restart when the burner fires.

Heat Pumps and Dual Fuel Systems

Heat pumps added for the upstairs, or paired with a gas furnace as dual fuel, bring their own repairs: defrost boards and sensors, reversing valves, outdoor fan motors and the outdoor temperature sensor that decides when the furnace takes over. A dual fuel system that never switches to gas on a cold night usually has a sensor or thermostat setup fault, not a failed heat pump.

Heating and AC Questions From Preakness

Why is my heat pump only blowing out cold air?

In heat mode the usual causes are a defrost cycle that has not finished, a reversing valve stuck in cooling, low refrigerant from a leak, an outdoor fan or compressor that stopped, or backup heat strips that never come on. A thermostat set up for the wrong system type can also leave the heat pump cooling when it should heat. Ice that covers the outdoor coil and stays points to a defrost board or sensor.

Why is my heat pump blowing cool air but not cold air?

In cooling, air that is only cool usually means low refrigerant from a leak, a dirty indoor or outdoor coil, a weak compressor or an outdoor fan that is not moving enough air. In heating, air that feels cool can be normal, because heat pump air comes out cooler than furnace air. It can also mean a defrost cycle, a stuck reversing valve or backup heat that is not coming on.

How to tell if a boiler is bad?

Signs include water leaking from the boiler itself rather than a valve or fitting, rust and scale around the sections, a burner that will not stay lit, pressure that keeps climbing or falling, banging and kettling sounds, and radiators that stay cold while the boiler runs. Many of these trace to replaceable parts. A cracked section or a leaking heat exchanger is what makes a boiler itself bad.
